Helpless: Oil Spill Awareness

Description

For information on why BP are entirely to blame for this incident that could have been prevented, read here: [link]

The oil spill in the Gulf is one of the worst environmental disasters we've ever faced—and more than a month after its initiation, it's still spilling. Up to 4,200,000 gallons of oil are pouring into the gulf every day, killing and endangering more than 4,000 species of wildlife including dolphins, tuna, dragonflies, egrets, turtles, and whale sharks, the world's largest fish. Florida manatees, listed as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, migrate to the Gulf every summer and are now more endangered than ever. Even animals not directly in contact with the oil are starving because everything they eat has been oiled. This oil well is only one of 35,000 in the Gulf alone, much less the rest of the world, and instead of thinking of ways to get along with less of these dangerous wells, the government is planning on expanding by drilling new ones in the Arctic, where many more unique animals will become endangered.

This drawing depicts three brown pelicans, a bird that was just taken of the endangered species list last year and now, because of the spill, is likely to be put right back on it. The mother pelican here is unable to protect her young against the results of human greed, and the situation is made more helpless as humans pour oil on them from above—or decide to expand offshore drilling instead of shutting it down.

How can you help? A good start is signing petitions, writing letters, and donating at these links and more:

But don't stop there. The best way to help shut down offshore oil wells is to use less oil. Biking to work or school, taking public transportation, and keeping the temperature in your house even a few degrees colder are great ways to save both wildlife and money that could be better spent helping to save these beautiful animals than going into the oil industry's wallet, where it may well be used to drill into the Arctic.

Now, with this disaster drawing awareness to the issues at hand, we need to focus on how to conserve and get along with less reliance on fossil fuels and toxic chemicals. For more information on our current disastrous system and to learn about all the details corporations want to keep from us, visit the Story of Stuff ( [link] ) and watch this humorous, 20 minute presentation. It's really an eye opener for anyone who hasn't realized what a downward direction we're headed in.
